In 2013 the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards' role in the British Army was changed to ‘light cavalry’. In November that year, the regiment's last Challenger 2 tank was piped out of the Wessex Barracks in Fallingbostel, Germany. Tanks were replaced by the Jackal, a light armoured reconnaissance vehicle.
In many respects, the regiment’s function today is similar to that of Tam Dalyell’s ‘Scots Dragoons’ in the 17th century. Mounted on motorised Jackals, 21st century Scots Dragoons Guards can move quickly through unforgiving landscapes, dismounting as infantry when required.
