During the German Spring Offensive Lieutenant Arthur Vincent led a troop of 3rd Dragoon Guards to charge German infantry positions near the French village of Villeselve. Vincent had already won the Military Cross for bravery at the Battle of Loos in 1915, and was awarded a bar for leading the charge at Villeselve under intense enemy machine gun fire.
