THE GULF WAR

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards' Challenger tanks crossed from Saudi Arabia into Iraq on 25 February 1991. The British Army's advance during Operation Granby was one of the fastest in its history. That night Second Lieutenant Richard Telfer of D Squadron won the Military Cross for his role in capturing a well defended Iraqi position. The British strategic objective was to cut off the main road between Kuwait City and Basra, blocking the Iraqi retreat. The regiment's tanks reached the Basra Road on 28 February - the last day of the war.
