The 3rd Carabiniers and the Royal Scots Greys were amalgamated to form the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys) in a ceremony held at Holyrood Park in Edinburgh. To mark the occasion Her Majesty the Queen presented the new regiment with a first standard and a drum horse named Trojan. The first Colonel of the Regiment was Major-General Ralph Younger, a veteran of the 3rd Carabiniers' Second World War campaigns who was in command at the Battle of Nunshigum.
