At the time of Kuwaiti independence from Britain, the 3rd Carabiniers’ C Squadron was based in Aden with a floating detachment patrolling the Gulf on a tank landing ship. In June 1961 the Squadron was deployed to Kuwait along with 42 Commando Royal Marines to counter the threat of an Iraqi invasion.
The Squadron’s Centurion tanks moved to a defensive position on the Mutla Ridge, north of Kuwait City, and secured the Basra Road to prevent the Iraqi Army reaching the capital. By August, the regiment’s other two squadrons had been posted to Kuwait from England, but the invasion did not take place and the Carabiniers were stood down.
