The 6th Dragoon Guards and the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) were part of the British Expeditionary Force, protecting the retreat from Mons to the Marne. The 3rd Dragoon Guards arrived on the Western Front in November 1914 whilst the 6th Dragoon Guards and the Greys were fighting in the First Battle of Ypres. The 3rd Dragoons Guards fought in the Second Battle of Ypres in the spring of 1915, before seeing action at Loos in September. In 1917, the 3rd Dragoon Guards and the Scots Greys were deployed in a dismounted role with the 6th Dragoon Guards held in reserve. Germany's Spring Offensive in March 1918 forced the Allies into retreat, but all three regiments joined the counter-attack in August that brought about the Allied victory.
